Filtered showerheads are the latest craze in home improvements that can level up your wellness routine. By reducing impurities and contaminants in your water system, your skin’s natural barrier can improve, revealing nourished and healthy skin and hair.

I explored the top filtered showerheads on the market: Canopy, Jolie, Afina, Hello Klean, and eskiin. Evaluated on filtration, effectiveness, ease of use, and price, which one checks the boxes to be your next Black Friday purchase?

Filtration Technology and Design

Canopy

Canopy

Canopy utilizes a tri-media filtration system, which incorporates activated carbon, KDF-55, and calcium sulfite. Activated carbon, made from coconut shells, is highly effective at absorbing impurities. KDF-55 is a formulation of copper and zinc that chemically reduces contaminants in the water. Lastly, calcium sulfite reduces chlorine by trapping suspended particles in the water as they pass through.

Canopy’s Filters

Pro-stylists recommend this type of proactive filtration for its ability to reduce chlorine and other contaminants, supporting healthier-looking skin and hair. Choose between a standard Filtered Showerhead, an ergonomic Handheld Showerhead, or a Shower System that combines both options. Whichever you choose, the sleek, modern design will elevate the aesthetic of your shower.

Jolie

Jolie

The Jolie Filtered Showerhead utilizes a similar filtration system to Canopy, except it omits the activated carbon. The Jolie Filter contains KDF-55 and calcium sulfite. It’s designed to reduce chlorine and heavy metals from your water.

With a focus on reducing chlorine, Jolie aims to alleviate irritated skin and bring back the hair and skin’s natural oils. The Jolie showerhead is a clean, modern design as well.

Eskiin

Eskiin

The eskiin Filtered Showerhead is built with 15 layers to filter out chlorine and heavy metals. Notable layers include: calcium sulfite, KDF-55, Coconut-activated carbon, and PP cotton. Similar to activated carbon, PP cotton absorbs dirt, dust, and impurities, leaving your hair softer.

It has a clunkier appearance, similar to a traditional showerhead. Additionally, eskiin offers a handheld filtered showerhead option that uses the same advanced 15-layer filtration technology in a more flexible format.

Afina

Afina

The Afina Filtered Shower Head purifies your water through a process called redox, which converts contaminants into clean water using a multi-stage filtration system featuring KDF-55 and calcium sulfite. Its design is smooth and shiny, but with a wider body that might not be aesthetically pleasing for every shower.

Hello Klean

Hello Klean

The Hello Klean Showerhead 2.0 uses KDF-55, amino acid granules, and activated carbon to remove contaminants from your water. Amino acid granules may help preserve natural oils while neutralizing harmful elements.

This combination of ingredients helps protect the hair from damage caused by metals. It has a unique design with an open middle. The appearance is trendy and minimalistic.

Convenience/Ease of Use

Replacing Canopy’s Filter

Neither Canopy nor eskiin requires a handyman for installation, but Canopy is more efficient due to its quick-release technology for filter replacement.

Canopy’s Filtered Showerhead requires little to no manual labor. To set it up, remove the existing showerhead by hand or with the provided wrench, then twist on the showerhead clockwise. The same applies to the Handheld Showerhead, which requires you to attach the mount to the shower pipe using the helpful tab to tighten the connection. The entire process should take less than five minutes. Plus, quick-release technology makes filter changes simple.

Eskiin also offers a similarly easy installation. Both their standard and handheld filtered showerheads require a filter change every 90 days. However, if you are in a multi-person household, eskiin recommends more frequent changes. You simply unscrew the faceplate and swap out the filters. However, while Eskiin is convenient to set up, it lacks the durability of the Canopy.

Jolie

Jolie and Afina are easy to install, but filter changes can be cumbersome.

Jolie showerheads come with a custom wrench that allows you to remove your old showerhead. Wrap the included tape around the threaded part of the exposed pipe 2x and tear. Twist the showerhead on until it’s snug.

To replace the Jolie showerhead filter every 90 days, unscrew the head from the pipe, remove the back cap, and then remove the old filter. Next, insert the new one into place. It’s not a complex process, but compared to the quick-release technology of the Canopy, it’s rather cumbersome.

Installing the Afina Filtered Shower Head is relatively easy. First, unscrew the existing showerhead. Next, wrap the end of the pipe with plumbers’ tape. Then, screw on the showerhead. Lastly, tighten it with a wrench. Afina filters must be replaced every 90 days. To replace the filter, you’ll need to unscrew the head from the spout.

The Hello Klean Showerhead is easy to install, but it only works with hose-based shower systems.

To install the showerhead, simply unscrew your existing showerhead from its hose, attach the Hello Klean, and run the water for 30 seconds. To replace the headpiece cartridge, rotate the tab to pop off the faceplate. Unscrew the head from the handle to swap the handle cartridge.

Effectiveness and Results

Before/After Using Canopy

91% of users noticed less dryness using the Canopy Filtered Showerhead.*

With a tri-media filter and good water pressure, the Canopy proactively reduces impurities. I took a deep dive into users’ results. For hair and scalp:*

  • 89% saw a reduction in product build-up.
  • 91% felt hair was cleaner.
  • 91% noticed less dryness.
  • 87% agreed hair felt smoother.
  • 81% said hair felt shinier.

As for the skin:*

  • 96% agreed skin felt cleaner.
  • 96% saw suds and cleansers rinse away more easily.
  • 87% noticed a reduction in dry skin.
  • 87% agreed skin felt healthier and brighter.

Jolie

Jolie proactively purifies water and enhances cleanliness, but has a smaller absorption of contaminants.

The filtration system purifies water and enhances cleanliness. The Filtered Showerhead reduces chlorine by over 85% throughout its lifespan. This helps with irritation and dryness caused by hard water.

However, there is no activated carbon to reduce impurities that would help amplify hair’s health and appearance. The Jolie is effective in nourishing the skin, but you may not achieve the smoother and shinier hair you might expect with activated carbon filtration options. Without this additional layer, dandruff and flakiness often persist.

Eskiin

Eskiin’s filter works to block out 98.7% of contaminants that may cause hair and skin issues, but consumers report that this doesn’t always last long.

The eskiin 15-layer filter removes 98.7% of contaminants, allowing for hydrated skin and hair. Eskiin says to expect results in 2–3 weeks of consistent use. However, these results may be more temporary as some customers have noted changes in water pressure over time.

Afina

Afina achieves immediate results, including softer hair and skin, but again, these results do not persist long-term.

Customers have noted that they experienced immediate results, including softer hair and more nourished skin, but they felt that the effects didn’t last long. It works to alleviate hard water, but not completely remove the contaminants.

Hello Klean

The Hello Klean Showerhead helps alleviate surface-level skincare issues, including dryness and irritation.

The filtration technology of Hello Klean reportedly removes 90% of chlorine from hard water. This is effective in helping to achieve smoother hair and skin. Their consumer test trials found that 88% reported their hair and skin felt softer after one month.

78% of the respondents reported an improvement in hair dryness. Overall, the technology of the Hello Klean works to make hair more manageable and feel smoother. It lacks the ability to improve the skin barrier, with only 67% of participants observing that their skin felt more balanced.

Additional Features

Canopy

Canopy offers a personalized shower experience with three stream settings and aroma diffusion.

The Canopy Filtered Showerhead goes a step further than supporting healthier-looking hair and skin with features that create a relaxing, personalized experience. Canopy offers three stream settings so that you can curate your shower experience to your liking.

Additionally, the Canopy Handheld Filtered Showerhead has a scalp massager attachment that invigorates the scalp to promote hair growth and cleanses away product build-up on wash days. Elevate the ambiance with aroma diffusion, which is included with every showerhead.

Price and Value

Canopy

Canopy offers a moderate price with a high long-term payoff.

You can purchase the handheld or standard showerhead outright for $150, a worthwhile investment considering the payoff of optimal water pressure and filtration technology.

Both showerhead options offer a showerhead and filter subscription, where a new filter comes every 90 days, which is currently on sale for $135. There is also a showerhead, filter, and aroma subscription that ships a filter and a three-piece aroma kit every 90 days. This is currently on sale for $125.

With Canopy, you can invest in subscriptions that add value without compromising quality.

Jolie is slightly more expensive, but lacks a thorough filtration process.

For a one-time purchase, the showerhead goes for $169, which includes one filter. You can opt for the subscription, which costs $152 upfront, then includes filters delivered to you for a recurring fee of $35 every 90 days.

Considering there is no activated carbon to absorb further impurities, you might benefit from a more affordable showerhead if you’re suffering from product buildup and dandruff.

Afina

The eskiin and Afina are affordable options, but lack longevity.

The eskiin goes for $149 for a one-time purchase that comes with a filter. A showerhead and filter subscription is available for $115 upfront, with filters delivered every 90 days for $33/shipment.

Although this is a more affordable option, some users have reported performance issues over time. You might find yourself purchasing more filters before the 90 days, especially if you’re in a household of two or more people.

The standalone price for the Afina Filtered Shower Head is $159. The subscription option is priced at $129. Filters are then delivered to your door every 60 days for $29.

At an affordable price, this showerhead is suitable for those just seeking immediate results for smoother hair. If you have more severe hard water issues, you might benefit from investing in a higher-quality showerhead that effectively removes impurities long-term.

The Hello Klean Showerhead is the least expensive option, but it doesn’t accommodate all showers.

You can purchase the Hello Klean Showerhead for $125 outright. Alternatively, a $100 subscription option is available, and new cartridges are delivered every three months for $38.50.

While the Hello Klean model is very affordable compared to the other options, it lacks adaptability for all shower types. It only works with hose-based systems (handheld showers and some fixed setups with detachable components), making it unsuitable for traditional overhead showerheads that mount directly to wall pipes.

If you already have a compatible shower system and are looking for a more affordable option to improve hair and skin texture, this might be the right choice for you.
