Navigating a Beauty Industry That No Longer Feels Familiar
Have you ever walked into a beauty store and felt completely out of place? The once-simple act of picking up a foundation or lipstick has turned into an overwhelming journey through endless aisles of products—many of which we don’t even recognize. Add in the pressure from social media influencers promoting 15-step skincare routines and intense makeup transformations, and it’s easy to feel like we’ve somehow been left behind in the beauty world.
For women over 40, the beauty industry has become increasingly difficult to navigate. While trends and techniques evolve with each generation, the speed at which they now change—thanks to social media—makes it harder than ever to keep up. We grew up in an era where makeup was about enhancing our features, not drastically altering them. But now, as we scroll through Instagram or TikTok, we see influencers using heavy contouring, exaggerated lip lining, and filters that blur imperfections, leaving us questioning whether we’ve been doing it “wrong” all these years.
The Social Media Effect: Unattainable Beauty Standards
Social media has dramatically shifted how beauty is perceived. Influencers, many of whom are in their early 20s, showcase makeup techniques designed for high-definition cameras and professional lighting—looks that don’t necessarily translate well to everyday life. The excessive layering of foundation, ultra-defined eyebrows, and sculpted cheekbones may look flawless on a screen, but in natural daylight, these trends can make mature skin appear cakey and exaggerated rather than refreshed.
Beyond technique, social media fosters an unrealistic perception of beauty. Many influencers rely on filters and editing to perfect their images, making it nearly impossible to tell what is real and what is digitally enhanced. This creates an unattainable standard that can leave women over 40 questioning whether their natural skin, with its fine lines and texture, is still “good enough” in today’s beauty landscape.
Carrie Wilson, owner of Carrie Wilson Makeup, highlights the growing disconnect:
“Women over 40 don’t need to chase every trend to look beautiful. We just want to feel our best—not compete with unrealistic beauty standards.”
She also warns that some of today’s makeup trends can actually have the opposite effect on mature skin:
“If women over 40 wear the same amount of makeup in certain places as 20-somethings do, it can age us. Overly heavy foundation and excessive contouring can emphasize fine lines and texture rather than enhance our features.”
Makeup should work for you, not against you.
The Overload of Choices: More Options, More Confusion
Gone are the days when foundation came in a handful of shades and skincare was categorized by “dry,” “oily,” or “combination.” Today, shopping for beauty products can feel like studying for an exam. Do we need a skin tint or a full-coverage foundation? What’s the difference between a radiant finish and a natural glow? And how do we navigate the endless rows of serums, acids, and primers promising youth in a bottle?
While having more choices is great, too many can be paralyzing. Many women either give up on makeup altogether or end up overbuying, filling their drawers with products they don’t fully understand or use correctly.
Carrie Wilson points out that this confusion often leads to two extremes:
“Instead of feeling empowered, many of us leave beauty stores feeling frustrated and questioning our makeup skills. Some women stop wearing makeup altogether, while others overbuy, trying to fill the void with products they don’t need.”
Makeup artist Carola Gonzalez advises women over 40 to simplify their routines by focusing on targeted products. Instead of layering on heavy foundation, she recommends using lightweight formulas to achieve a polished yet natural look (Lukas, 2024). Additionally, a full-coverage concealer can be used to cover dark spots and redness without requiring a thick layer of foundation (Lukas, 2024).
Finding Confidence in Makeup Again
The good news? Looking and feeling beautiful at 40+ doesn’t require mastering every TikTok trend or buying a new product every week. The key is finding techniques and products that complement mature skin and lifestyle.
Practical Tips for a Simplified, Ageless Beauty Routine:
- Stick to What Works – If you love a natural, glowing complexion, embrace it. You don’t need to change your routine just because social media says so.
- Follow Age-Appropriate Influencers – Seek out makeup artists and beauty experts who cater to mature skin. This ensures that the advice and products they recommend align with your needs.
- Prioritize Skin Prep – Well-moisturized skin makes foundation application smoother and prevents makeup from settling into fine lines. A hydrating primer can help maintain a dewy, youthful glow.
- Be Selective with Makeup Trends – Some trends work beautifully for all ages, while others are best left to the 20-somethings. For example, overly heavy contouring can age the face rather than enhance it, whereas a soft blush on the apples of the cheeks creates a lifted, fresh look (Gould, 2024).
- Invest in Cream and Liquid Formulas – Cream-based blushes, eyeshadows, and foundations blend seamlessly into mature skin, avoiding the dryness and settling that powders can cause (Gould, 2024).
- Seek Personalized Advice – A one-on-one consultation with a professional makeup artist can help refine techniques and rebuild confidence in applying makeup.
Carrie Wilson encourages women to trust their instincts:
“I truly believe that women actually know more than we think—we just need a little guidance to refine our techniques and boost our confidence.”
Beauty Should Feel Empowering, Not Exhausting
Makeup is meant to enhance, not complicate, our lives. At 40+, we should feel empowered by our beauty knowledge—not lost in an overwhelming industry that often overlooks us. Instead of chasing every trend, let’s focus on feeling confident in our own skin, embracing what works for us, and remembering that beauty isn’t about keeping up—it’s about showing up, exactly as we are.
